VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a naturally occurring peptide used for its potent anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, and immunomodulatory effects, making it a subject of research for treating various conditions like asthma, autoimmune diseases, and certain gastrointestinal disorders. It also plays roles in the body as a neurotransmitter, regulating functions like the sleep-wake cycle and smooth muscle activity. 

Medical uses and research

• Inflammatory and autoimmune diseases:

  VIP is being investigated for its potential to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by suppressing inflammation and modulating the immune response. 

• Respiratory disorders:

  Due to its bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory properties, it is being studied as a potential treatment for asthma, COPD, CIRS, and other lung conditions. 

• Gastrointestinal function:

  VIP is involved in regulating digestion, influencing smooth muscle contraction, water/electrolyte secretion, and hormone release in the gut. 

• Other potential applications:

  Research suggests possible benefits for conditions like septic shock, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases, although more human studies are needed.
